(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, the Department of General Services (DGS), together with the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and community leaders, celebrated the completion of the transportation agency’s new headquarters in Ward 6 that features customized tenant improvement alterations, allowing DDOT to continue providing public services The 9-story building is located at 250 M Street, SE, directly across the street from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
“The Department of General Services (DGS) takes great pride in supporting District agencies with stellar facilities that operate best for their working environment,” said DGS Director Keith A. Anderson. “DDOT’s new headquarters was strategically located and planned to enhance the work this vital agency provides every day for residents, commuters and visitors to Washington, DC.”
The $25 Million interior build-out of the DDOT headquarters is nestled in the Navy Yard neighborhood in Southeast and is comprised of 180,569 square feet of office space, an 1,891 square foot conference center, and a 3-level underground parking garage.
Other unique features include electric vehicle charging stations in the garage to support DDOT’s continued electrification of its vehicle fleet, reclaimed wood provided by DDOT’s Urban Forestry Division for collaborative-work spaces throughout the building, and a Bike Storage Room to accommodate 64 personal or DDOT fleet bicycles. In addition, more than 600 square feet of
paint-on-canvas art installations, created by D.C. local artist Michael Crossett through the DGS ‘Percent for Art’ program, can be seen inside the new DDOT cafe. Staff will enjoy a new green roof and accessible roof terrace.
“For more than a decade, the DDOT team has called Navy Yard home and we are elated to move in to a new, modernized space that will accommodate us as we continue to grow and evolve with this city,” said Interim DDOT Director Everett Lott. “We are grateful to our colleagues at DGS for their support and collaboration through this process.”
The new facility will be home to about half of the more than 1,100 DDOT staff members who work to ensure that the District’s roads are safe, reliable and easy to navigate for the residents, commuters, and visitors who use the transportation network. Since its creation in 2002, DDOT has managed the District’s transportation network, public space and other programs including bike and pedestrian safety, traffic management, Vision Zero, and maintaining a healthy tree canopy for the District, among others. The new headquarters was designed to meet LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.
