DGS’s Percent for Art program leads the nation in public art investments, turning public spaces into vibrant reflections of community and culture.
(WASHINGTON, DC) —Today, the Department of General Services (DGS) is calling on artists in all mediums—from painting and sketching to digital art, photography, textiles, mixed media, and more – to apply for over 200 public art commissions across 13 District-owned facilities.
DC’s Percent for Art program is unmatched in scale and structure. Since 2013, the program has awarded over 1,200 public art commissions–more than any comparable program around the country.
“DC has long been known as one of the world’s cultural capitals, and at DGS, we recognize that public art is a powerful expression of community,” said DGS Director Delano Hunter. “By adding nearly 200 new pieces to the citywide art collection, we continue to beautify the District while investing in artists from the very start of our capital projects.”
The program serves as a one-stop shop for artists, managing permitting, fabrication, site preparation and more. This streamlined approach allows artists to focus on their creative vision while District Government handles the logistics.
These new artworks will be installed in public schools, recreation centers, parks and other municipal assets—ensuring that residents across all eight wards experience the transformative power of public art. As the capital city evolves, these pieces will help shape the visual identity of Washington, DC for generations to come.
