(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, the Bowser Administration announced the completion of Phase 1 renovations at Eastern Market Metro Park, located at 800 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE. The overall park project is the result of a 2015 community-led master park plan that illustrated potential new public space improvements surrounding the Eastern Market Metro Station. The primary objective of the enhancements is to transform the Metro Park area and the surrounding parkland, managed by the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), into a safe and thriving ‘Town Square’ supportive of multi-generational social activities in the historic Capitol Hill community for residents to enjoy.
The Phase 1 renovation work, performed by the Department of General Services (DGS), includes a playground for 2-5 year olds, playground space for 5-12 year olds, a recreation lawn, deck nature area, bioretention space, and a splash pad. While the playgrounds will be open under the District’s COVID-19 reopening guidelines, the splash pad will remain closed until further notice.
“DGS appreciates the continued support of the Eastern Market Metro Park Advisory Team throughout this project,” said Keith A. Anderson, Director of the Department of General Services. “Their contributions, as well as those from the community, have been invaluable and we look forward to continue working together as we advance to Phase 2 of this transformative project.”
The new park will encompass 21st Century standards and best practices in programming, safety and sustainability, and the creation of a ‘Town Square’ that can be used as a “destination park.”
“We are excited for another park to come online this summer, and we look forward to doing our part to allow families a safe place to continue social distancing but still have fun outdoors,” said Delano Hunter, Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation.
Project renovations will also improve pedestrian access while increasing safety, circulation and wayfinding. Phase 2 work will involve renovations to the remaining five parcels of land and is anticipated to begin this fall.
