Extreme heat is dangerous and can cause illnesses and death. As temperatures rise, you are encouraged to take an active role in your safety and take action to stay cool.
• Stay indoors: find places in the shade or with air conditioning to seek relief from the heat. Due to impacts from COVID-19, the list of cooling centers has changed. Visit heat.dc.gov for an updated list of cooling centers.
• Do not leave children or pets in vehicles. Vehicles can reach dangerous temperatures within 10 minutes. For all animal emergencies, including animals left outside in extreme temperatures or in vehicles, call the Humane Rescue Alliance at 202-576-6664.
• Drink plenty of fluids: increase your fluid intake but don’t drink liquids that contain alcohol, caffeine, or large amounts of sugar.
• Wear appropriate clothing and sunscreen: pick lightweight, loose fitting, light-colored clothing, and wide brimmed hats. SPF 15 or higher sunscreen is best.
• Check on your neighbors: young children, the elderly, and those with access and functional needs are the most vulnerable in our community.
• Pet owners should keep pets indoors, walk pets early in the morning, and give pets plenty of water.
