Ferebee Hope Recreation Center and DGS Headquarters Awarded Industry Honors as “Best Project” in Regional Categories

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, the D.C. Department of General Services (DGS) announced that the Ferebee Hope Recreation Center and the Department’s newly constructed headquarters were awarded  “Best Project: K-12 Education” and “Best Project: Government/Public Building” for the Mid-Atlantic Region by the Engineering News-Record (ENR)

“We are proud that one of the nation’s leading engineering outlets has recognized the Department of General Services and our contractor partners for our excellence in creating world-class facilities and spaces for all District residents to live, work, and thrive,” said DGS Acting Director Delano Hunter. “The Ferebee Hope Recreation Center and DGS’s newly constructed headquarters continue to bring national recognition to our work and to foster economic viability, environmental stewardship, and equity across all eight wards.”

As part of the larger Ferebee Hope Redevelopment Project led by KIPP DC, DGS supported the construction of a new recreation center within the Ferebee Hope campus. This facility houses several new recreation resources, including a gymnasium, multipurpose room, fitness center, indoor pool, boxing gym, and new locker rooms. The project also equipped the campus with a new computer lounge and kitchen. Completed in Summer 2021, the project was supported by Studio Twenty-Seven Architecture / Hughes Group and MCN Build and represents a $13 million investment in the campus.

In 2019, Mayor Bowser issued a Mayor’s Order directing the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development and DGS to identify potential relocation properties for District government agencies in Wards 7 and 8. The DGS headquarters, a 258,500 square foot, six-story commercial building with ground-floor retail, was the first newly constructed government office building to open utilizing Mayor Bowser’s East of the River leasing strategy.

Asland Capital Partners led the development and construction of the new DGS headquarters in partnership with GIS UIS, who acted as an investor.
